Steve Bruce was disappointed with Hull's result as they sacrificed a 2-0 lead to draw away at Newcastle.

Hull City boss Steve Bruce admitted their 2-2 draw at Newcastle felt more like a defeat after throwing away a two-goal lead.

The Tigers looked to have taken charge at St James’ Park as stunning strikes from Nikica Jelavic and Mohamed Diame put them 2-0 up with 22 minutes left to play.

But the introduction of Papiss Cisse at that point turned the game in Newcastle’s favour as the Senegal international struck twice to earn a share of the spoils.

Bruce told Sky Sports: “Every time you go away from home and get a point, you’re delighted, but it feels like a loss. Unfortunately we’ve made mistakes which we’ve been punished for.

“We’ve scored two wonderful goals which would have graced any arena, but it feels as if we’ve been beaten now.

“Apart from the mistakes we made late on, we looked a very good team. Unfortunately, we made mistakes which cost us.”

Matthew Le Tissier reflects on Newcastle's comeback against Hull as Papiss Cisse came off the bench to seal a 2-2 draw at St James Park.

Bruce took the time to praise the St James’ Park supporters, with the anticipated protests against manager Alan Pardew and owner Mike Ashley significantly more muted than had been expected.

He added: “I have to say the Newcastle fans today were magnificent. There was none of the nonsense we’ve read about in the week.

“They got behind their team – we encouraged them by making mistakes – but to a man they were fantastic.

“The crowd played their part in Newcastle getting back into the game, they were terrific today.”
