Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel insists Leicester showed against Chelsea they will be a match for anyone in the Premier League this season.

The Foxes are back in the top flight for the first time since 2003/2004 and after holding Everton 2-2 in their opener, held title favourites Chelsea for an hour on Saturday before falling to strikes from Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.

It was a superb battling display for the visitors and it could have been totally different had it not been for Thibaut Courtois, who saved brilliantly from David Nugent when clean through.

"We played really well and bossed the game and at half-time we were thinking we were the best team," said the son of Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel.

"At this level, if you don’t take your chances you get punished and those are the margins you’re up against. But we have every reason to be proud of the way we played."

On making the step up from the Championship, he added: "I don’t think it feels massive. We showed in the first half that’s the way we can play.

More from Chelsea V Leicester

"We’ve worked really hard to be here. We enjoy playing teams like Chelsea but we go into every game with a positive mentality. We can play really well and we do have a very good chance of getting some very good results."
