Striker defeats battling Quakers to book second-round spot

A solitary second-half goal from Enoch Showunmi earned Leeds a 1-0 victory at Darlington in the first round of the Carling Cup. The striker showed great awareness with 36 minutes remaining, reacting quicker than Quakers goalkeeper David Knight to reach a cross from Robert Snodgrass. After a tame opening Leeds went close in the 27th minute when Michael Doyle's fierce volley was parried by Knight before his defence scrambled the ball to safety. Darlington responded with two dangerous raids. Chris Lumsdon's free-kick was met by Lee Thorpe, whose header flew wide. Thorpe then set up Jamie Chandler but he could only fire straight at defender Jason Crowe. Leeds went close after 55 minutes when Bradley Johnson's shot cannoned off the crossbar and skipper Jonathan Howson saw his follow-up drive saved by Knight. Simon Grayson's side dominated for long spells once they went ahead but Darlington had their moments. Young striker David Dowson saw an effort ruled out for offside then tested Leeds goalkeeper Shane Higgs with a low shot. The Quakers almost equalised in stoppage time when Mark Bower flashed a header narrowly wide from Gary Smith's corner.
