Skipper believes England in great position after Ukraine win

Matchwinner John Terry believes the 2-1 victory over Ukraine has set England firmly on the road to the World Cup finals. Terry's close-range finish in the 85th minute maintained England's 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifying Group Six and put Fabio Capello's men within touching distance of next year's finals in South Africa. "We're in a great position in the group and this has really set us up," Terry said. "They (Ukraine) have a game in hand but this puts us in a great position. "We've got Kazakhstan away and Andorra at home so it is two tough games next but hopefully six points. At the moment things are going well." England looked to be easing to a 1-0 win courtesy of Peter Crouch's first-half volley but Terry's former team-mate Andriy Shevchenko looked to have spoiled the party when he equalised after 74 minutes. "We were disappointed to concede a goal late on but showed great character to come back and win the game, so there are some real positives," Terry said. "It meant a lot (to score) and it has given us the win, so I'm delighted. "There was some great fight and desire from the lads, we're not settling for 1-1 and we went on to win the game." Ukraine must meet Croatia on 6th June, the same day as England take on Kazakhstan, meaning the Three Lions will return to base to face Andorra four days later knowing their place at the biggest stage of all could be virtually secure four months ahead of schedule.
