Home defeat rocks pursuit of top two
Sevilla's pursuit of the top two in La Liga was dealt another blow on Saturday night as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Real Betis.
Sergio Garcia and star asset Ricardo Oliveira both netted in the second half at the Ramon Sanchez as Sevilla, who had Aldo Duscher sent off for two bookings on 70 minutes, could only net an injury-time consolation through Frederic Kanoute.
The first half had ended goalless, but with 20 minutes remaining of the match Garcia latched onto Juan Melli's long ball to volley past Andres Palop.
Sevilla pushed for an equaliser and were duly caught on the counter-attack 13 minutes later as Oliveira broke the offside trap to slot in a second.
Kanoute headed home in time added on, but the defeat leaves Sevilla nine points adrift of second-placed Real Madrid - who defeated Racing Santander in Saturday's early kick-off - and 18 adrift of leaders Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Betis have climbed three places to 13th in the Primera Liga table.
