Exeter made to pay for missing penalty
Two Jack Lester goals earned Chesterfield a double over Exeter, who were made to pay for missing a second-half penalty in a 2-1 defeat.
Dean Moxey fired Exeter into a 17th-minute lead with an unstoppable free-kick from 20 yards over the defensive wall, that flew into the top-right corner of the goal.
City goalkeeper Paul Jones was in inspired form, denying Lester three times as well as pulling off a fine stop from Jamie Winter, but he was finally beaten in the 68th minute when Lloyd Kerry put Lester clear.
Substitute Steve Basham had the chance to put Exeter back in front when Aaron Downes handled in the 76th minute but Tommy Lee dived to his right to save the penalty.
Lester struck the winner four minutes later when he again beat the offside trap to net his 14th goal of the season.
One of the biggest cheers of the night came when Derek Niven made his first appearance following his recovery from testicular cancer.
