Mikel Arteta's late penalty earned Everton a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven at Goodison Park, but David Moyes' side looked far from sharp.
The late reprieve is unlikely to lift the gloom that has surrounded Moyes' depleted squad this summer, and their self-confessed lack of preparation appeared evident as they laboured through their final friendly before next weekend's season opener against Blackburn.
Nordin Amrabat gave PSV a deserved first-half lead with a fine solo goal but
with just a few minutes left, Joseph Yobo was brought down in the area and
Arteta drilled the spot-kick past Andreas Isaksson.
The Toffees started this friendly well enough and Steven Pienaar, who knows all about PSV from his time with Ajax, almost worked his way through on a couple of occasions.
One of his runs ended with the ball breaking for Yakubu Aiyegbeni in the box,
and his low shot cannoned over off former Manchester City goalkeeper Isaksson's knee.
But PSV looked comfortable in the first half, and their goal in the 32nd minute
was a gem.
Amrabat surged into the box - shrugging off Leon Osman on the way - and curled a fine angled effort into the top corner.
The Eredivisie side maintained possession with ease, particularly in midfield,
and Moyes moved Phil Jagielka into midfield to exert his influence after the
break with Joleon Lescott coming on at the back.
Promising
Everton sent on Nuno Valente for Leighton Baines, and promising youngster Lukas Jutkiewicz for Rodwell while Pienaar was replaced by highly-rated Jose Baxter.
The 16-year-old's arrival injected more spark into Everton and the Bootle-born
midfielder blasted one effort high over the crossbar before Yakubu stirred into life to curl another effort just wide.
James Wallace, also 16, replaced Phil Neville in the 85th minute before
Arteta's penalty ensured honours were even for Moyes' young side.
The Everton boss knows he must move in the transfer market, and with his squad being so thin he may have to use his aspiring teenage stars when the Premier League campaign gets under way next Saturday.
