USA advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa America after a 1-0 win over Paraguay despite playing most of the second half with 10 men in Philadelphia.

Clint Dempsey put the USA ahead before DeAndre Yedlin was sent off three minutes after the break for a second booking.

The defeat ended Paraguay's interest in the tournament but they should have gone ahead in the 11th minute when Miguel Almiron burst into the box but a superb tackle from Josh Brooks bailed the US out.

And the host nation then went ahead after 27 minutes when Jermaine Jones and Gyasi Zardes combined in midfield and Zardes rolled the ball into the path of Dempsey, who smashed home his second goal of the tournament.

Brad Guzan preserved the lead late in the first half with a brilliant save to deny Dario Lezcano but two yellow cards in the space of a minute for Yedlin saw him head for an early bath.

Jorge Benitez and Almiron then brought a smart double save out of Guzan but the US held on to advance to the last eight.
