Graeme Souness says the people who attacked Manchester United's team bus are "morons" and deserve to go to jail for a long time.

West Ham's farewell game at the Boleyn Ground was delayed by 45 minutes on Tuesday night after the Manchester United bus was prevented from arriving at the stadium.

Supporters outside the ground threw cans and bottles at the vehicle, smashing windows and causing significant damage - and Sky Sports pundit Souness did not hold back in his criticism of those responsible.

"The Premier League has got such a profile around the world and it will make headlines unfortunately," Souness said.

"It will be a handful of people, who don't possess grey matter in their heads.

"They are fools. Just think of it. You throw a brick or a bottle and it smashes a window. These are professional athletes. A bit of glass goes in someone's eye and you lose an eye and it finishes their career.

"These are morons. I hope they catch them with the CCTV that is out there now and ban them forever. Go to prison for a long time. Morons."

Souness was especially disappointed with the news after experiencing the electric atmosphere in the stadium on Tuesday night.

The club are due to move to the Olympic Stadium next season and ended their 112-year stay at the Boleyn Ground in style with a 3-2 victory.

Winston Reid scored the historic winning goal as West Ham battled back from 2-1 down late on - and Souness says the club needs to "bottle" the atmosphere that they produced.

"My six-year-old son is with me," he explained after the match. "I said 'come to West Ham, you'll get a good atmosphere. It's quite a special place'.

"He will not believe what he saw. This was the place to be tonight. I know we get carried away with moments, but this is as good as any I've been to in a long, long time.

"The crowd were fantastic. They were that good they shouldn't leave here. Bottle this and continue to play here."

Souness does not believe in the principle of 'the West Ham way' and argued the current squad are capable of more than pretty football.

And he said it was the tenacity and hard work of the midfield players that laid the foundations for their deserved win on Tuesday.

"It was a fantastic game of football. It was raw," he added. "It was the second-last game of the season and the players looked like they had just come out of pre-season. They were all bang at it.

Graeme Souness on West Ham

"West Ham deserved to win the game tonight. As well as Man Utd played in the second half at times in the second half, West Ham were fabulous. They wanted it so much.

"Normally West Ham would come and play football against you. This team now are capable of going to war with you - but if you want to play football they can mix it as well.

"That wasn't a typical West Ham that I've known in my lifetime in football. They were silky, smooth and easy on the eye.

"This lot are raw. The mix in midfield were fabulous tonight. It was a truly team performance."
