Jamie Carragher says the performance at Liverpool on Monday night wasn't one he would expect from a Manchester United side, but believes nobody is going to change Jose Mourinho's style of management.
United held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield, with the away side registering just 35 per cent possession as they set out to stifle their opposition.
"That performance tonight I wouldn't expect from a Manchester United team, especially in the second half with how defensive it was," said Carragher on Monday Night Football. "But you'd expect it from a Jose Mourinho team.
"I don't think there's anyone better in world football as a manager at nullifying the opposition. But will Manchester United fans be frustrated how defensive they were second half?
"No one is going to change Jose Mourinho, I think even the board and supporters will have to accept that. Tonight was a good point and they've done a job on Liverpool. This is a man with two European Cups and titles all over the world, he's going to do it his way.
"At times it will be killing games and nullifying the opposition. It may not be the Manchester United way but for Manchester United it's more about getting back to winning trophies and challenging for the title again than how you play."
Carragher was joined by Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs in the studio, and the former Red Devils player and coach said that while the style of play wasn't ideal, the fans would be happy so long as the results followed.
"It all comes down to results," said Giggs. "United had 35 per cent possession tonight. Last season Louis van Gaal was getting stick because we were having 65 per cent, but we got a win.
"If you have 35 per cent of the ball and you win, then everybody is happy. But if you're getting draws continuously and not winning, then that's when the supporters won't be happy."
