AFC Wimbledon have signed Connor Smith on a free transfer following his release by Watford.

The 22-year-old midfielder had his contract at Vicarage Road cancelled on Thursday and put pen to paper with the Dons just 24 hours later.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international earned his break in the game through Sky TV programme Football's Next Star.

He made 13 appearances for Watford and also had loan spells with Wealdstone, Gillingham and Stevenage.

"I am delighted," Smith told the Dons' website. "I had been at Watford for a long time, ever since I moved over from Ireland. It's tough to leave Watford, but I will always have good memories of my time there.

"I am happy to join this club. Hopefully I can get playing every week and help the club into the play-offs and promotion.

"There were a few clubs sniffing around, but the genuine interest came from Wimbledon and they wanted to do it. I am happy to join a club on the up and hopefully I can help the team to fulfil their objectives this season."
