James Milner says it will be a "special occasion" when England face Euro 2016 Group B rivals Wales in a 'Battle of Britain' in Lens on Thursday.

England were denied victory in their opening group match on Saturday, conceding a stoppage-time goal to draw 1-1 with Russia in Marseille.

Wales enjoyed the perfect start to their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup, claiming a 2-1 victory over Slovakia earlier on Saturday in Bordeaux.

Milner, who came on for the final three minutes against Russia, is expecting a difficult match against Chris Coleman's side.

"Obviously it's going to be tough," the England midfielder told FA TV. "It's a very different game to the first one. We all know each other very well, both sets of players, so it'll be an interesting game.

"It's perhaps more the type of game that we're used to playing week-in, week-out but with a tournament atmosphere and it's going to be a special occasion."

Milner was also full of praise for England's performance against Russia, insisting that it was the best by any team in the tournament so far.

"I think if you look at all the other games in the tournament so far, only one has really stood out and (we) put in a really good performance," he added.

How have the Three Lions fared in previous meetings against The Dragons?

"We did that and stood out. We played a positive round of football, but ultimately didn't get the result. We have to make sure we are a bit more ruthless. Hopefully we can get all three points in the next game."

However, the Liverpool midfielder admitted England will still need to recover quickly from the disappointment of failing to defeat Russia and bounce-back against the Welsh.

"Yeah obviously the whole group is disappointed, but it's important in a tournament situation to get over it quickly," he said.

"Ultimately it was a good performance and that's the way football is sometimes. The three friendlies we played before the tournament, we didn't play particularly well, but we won every game.

"(We) played pretty well in the first game of the tournament, but we don't get the points. That's the disappointing thing, but there's plenty of positives and we have to bounce back very quickly, get over it and look forward to the next game."
