David Unsworth has turned down the chance to become Oxford United's new manager, according to Sky sources.
Unsworth was one of a number of candidates under consideration by Oxford chairman Darryl Eales as a replacement for Spaniard Pep Clotet, who was sacked last month.
But it is understood Eales is only part way through the process of appointing a new manager and is yet to offer the position to anybody.
Unsworth returned to his role U23s boss at Everton after taking caretaker charge of the club for eight matches following Ronald Koeman's sacking in October.
Clotet was dismissed following Oxford's 2-1 loss at home to League One's bottom side Bury. That defeat to the Shakers was Oxford's ninth loss in 13 games.
Derek Fazackerley is currently in caretaker charge of Oxford and led the club to a 3-2 win at Charlton last weekend.
