Nigeria claim third place in the African Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Algeria.

Nsofor strike secures victory for Shaibu Amodu's side

Victor Nsofor's strike ensured Nigeria claimed third place in the African Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Algeria. The Malaga striker was put through in the 56th minute by Portsmouth's Nwankwo Kanu and beat three defenders before slotting the ball beyond Mohamed Zemmomouche. Shaibu Amodu's much-changed Nigeria side had enjoyed more of the chances early on but it was Algeria who had the ball in the net first, only for Kalu Uche's effort to be ruled out for offside. Nigeria came out after the break in determined mood and Nsofor should have done better when Taye Taiwo's free-kick had fallen kindly at his feet in the 46th minute. Instead Nsofor's scuffed shot clipped the crossbar before rebounding over. After the breakthrough came Algeria pressed forward but Hassan Yebda was unable to trouble Vincent Enyeama with his weak effort. Abdelkader Ghezzal and Madjid Bougherra also went close for Rabah Saadane's side but Nigeria held on for the victory.
