Fierro and Parades on target in warm-up win

Chile overcame New Zealand 2-0 in a World Cup warm-up match thanks to goals from Gonzalo Fierro and Estedan Parades. The tournament in South Africa begins on Friday but Chile and New Zealand will be among the last teams to open their campaigns. An unusual friendly match was therefore scheduled, split into three segments of 30 minutes to ensure that almost every member of each squad was given a run out. One player not to feature for New Zealand was captain Ryan Nelsen, who did not even travel from their training base due to an ear infection. Chile laboured to break down their dogged but technically limited opponents until Fierro opened the scoring in the 68th minute. Parades then struck four minutes later to seal the victory and boost Chile's confidence ahead of the World Cup. Marcelo Bielsa's side face European champions Spain, Honduras and Switzerland in Group H, while New Zealand do battle with Italy, Paraguay and Slovakia in Group F.
