Paul Merson has questioned Gonzalo Higuain’s pedigree to play in a key role in the Premier League ahead of his move to Chelsea.

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Juventus to sign Higuain on loan until the end of the season, according to Sky in Italy.

It is understood the loan could then be extended for another 12 months, subject to certain conditions.

Higuain has been on loan at AC Milan from Juventus since the start of the season and Maurizio Sarri - who worked with him at Napoli - will be looking for him to solve his problem in attack.

However, Merson is not sure the 31-year-old Argentina international has the credentials to make an instant impact at Premier League level.

"I'm not sure on him," Merson said.

"He was a great player but looks below his best of late. He hasn't pulled up trees for a while and now he's coming to the hardest league in the world.

"He won't have any time to adapt either as he needs to hit the ground running as Chelsea need someone to play as their focal point.

"I'd rather someone that has played in the Premier League before and knows what this league demands."
