Everton 2016/17 season preview: Five questions

Ronald Koeman is Everton's new head coach for the 2016/17 season.

As we preview the new Premier League season, we pick out five questions for Everton.

What have they done in the transfer market?

Ronald Koeman has been in place as Everton's new manager since June but the transfer window has only just begun to heat up at Goodison Park. Idrissa Gueye became their first major signing in a £7.1m deal from Aston Villa, but most of the talk around the club has concerned potential outgoings rather than new signings.

John Stones has joined Manchester City, while Romelu Lukaku is a target for his former club Chelsea. Everton took a club record £47.5m from the Stones deal, reinvesting a £12m chunk in the signing of Ashley Williams from Swansea.

What does the manager say?

"The top four is difficult because you have the big six in the Premier League. But Everton fans expect more than the last couple of years and the owners would like to see more. I think it is realistic to do better and fight for European football. I said the same at Southampton, they could do more, and I think Everton can too. It is easier to take that next step and grow when you are at a big club."

What's the pundit verdict?

"I like Ronald Koeman a lot, but if Everton let Romelu Lukaku and John Stones leave without replacing them they would drop from eighth to 12th in my predicted table." - Paul Merson

What's your prediction?

Everton will hope for considerable improvement on last season's 11th-placed finish under Roberto Martinez. The Toffees are rated as 100/1 outsiders for the title by Sky Bet, but they are 10/1 to finish in the top four. Romelu Lukaku is 12/1 fourth favourite to be Premier League's top goalscorer, but he appears more likely to spend next season at Chelsea than Everton.
