Season review

Tottenham exceeded all expectations in 2016/17, clinching their highest Premier League finish with a points total that would have been enough to win the title last season. They also finished above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years.

Their second-placed finish continues a pattern of constant improvement since Pochettino's appointment three years ago, and memorable wins over Arsenal and Manchester United ensured they left White Hart Lane on a high.

Harry Kane celebrates with team-mates after scoring the opening goal of the game

Harry Kane's extraordinary goal haul in their final two games of the season propelled him to a second successive golden boot, while the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld also enjoyed outstanding individual campaigns. With Pochettino vowing to stay at the club this summer, Spurs will hope to build on this season in the years ahead.

EXPERT ANALYSIS - MATT LE TISSIER

Player of the year: Christian Eriksen

It is a tough one. Dele Alli and Harry Kane have stolen the headlines, but Alli didn't start well. In terms of consistency you've got Eriksen, who has been very good throughout the season and got the fans award. I'd go along with the fans, just pipping Kane and Alli.

2017/18 prospects

Given what they've done for the last two seasons, they should be challenging, but the biggest thing they need to improve on is playing at Wembley. The opposition raising their game is the biggest thing Spurs are contending with, especially players playing there for the first times in their careers. There's not a lot of weaknesses in that [Tottenham] side. Perhaps an additional forward, a better replacement for Kane than Vincent Janssen.
