Tottenham supporters will look back on the 2015/16 season with mixed feelings. Their young, vibrant side provided plenty of highlights, pushed Leicester close in the title race and secured Champions League football. But a final day drubbing at already relegated Newcastle allowed Arsenal to once again finish above their north London rivals and ensured Spurs' campaign ended on a frustrating note.
The season didn't start in particularly impressive fashion, with Spurs having to wait until their fifth match of the season to taste victory - a run which included disappointing home draws with Stoke and Everton.
However, Mauricio Pochettino's men hit top gear at the end of September, thrashing Manchester City 4-1 at White Hart Lane, with Harry Kane netting his first of the season in the process. Doubts continued to linger over whether Kane was in fact a one season wonder, with that solitary goal his only strike until a hat-trick against Bournemouth in late October showed the England hitman had found his scoring boots once again.
As rivals Arsenal faltered, an unlikely title tussle between Leicester and Spurs ensued. However, despite keeping the pressure up on Claudio Ranieri's side, Spurs never hit top spot and eventually saw their title hopes ended with an ill-tempered draw at Chelsea.
Quotes of the season
"We have enjoyed a great season and we believe this is just the beginning. We have a long-term project and huge belief that we can achieve something big here for the future." - Mauricio Pochettino after signing new deal in May.
"Do you need an aggressive streak to thrive? You could say that. A lot of the great players have that mentality. I want to be the best I can and if that's what I need to do it, that's what I do." Dele Alli refuses to curb his ways in February.
"If I can be a role model or if I can maybe make another manager play a young player coming through, rather than buy a player, that's incredible." - Harry Kane in March on effects of his fine form.
Stats of the season
Five of Tottenham's league defeats were by a single-goal margin - the other was their 5-1 loss at Newcastle
Tottenham finished the season second in the Premier League for goals scored and second for fewest goals conceded
Spurs striker Harry Kane finished as the Premier League's top scorer with 25 goals
Matt Le Tissier's view
"This season has been the most exciting in Spurs' recent history, to have such a sustained attack on the title, taking it down to the 36th game of the season. They've got the best defence in the Premier League and have played some really good attacking football.
"Only City have scored more and with the best defence in the league you do wonder how they didn't win the title. There might be a tinge of disappointment from the way it ended, but the fans certainly got value for money."
