Newport pulled off a surprise win in the first round of the Carabao Cup as they beat Southend 2-0 at Roots Hall on Tuesday.
Shawn McClousky scored twice in the space of six minutes for Sky Bet League Two Newport as the Shrimpers suffered a sixth opening-round exit in succession.
McClousky wasted a golden chance to open the scoring midway through the first half when he headed Robbie Willmott's right-wing cross over the bar from six yards.
In reply, Southend striker Simon Cox sent a close-range header straight at Newport goalkeeper Joe Day before Stephen Hendrie struck the outside of the right post from 20 yards.
But Newport hit back to break the deadlock in the 52nd minute when McClousky slid the ball home after Willmott had beaten Shrimpers goalkeeper Ted Smith to a long ball forward.
Six minutes later, McClousky added a second when he tapped home a right-wing cross from Tom Owen-Evans to deservedly send Newport into the second round.
