Sides play out another classic with West Brom progressing
Roberto Di Matteo's love affair with the FA Cup continued as his West Brom side saw off the challenge of 10-man Newcastle in a 4-2 fourth round victory at the Hawthorns.
Di Matteo's cup pedigree is not in doubt, the former Chelsea midfielder scored in two finals for the Blues, and he watched as a penalty in each half from midfielder Graham Dorrans helped Albion to victory.
Jonas Olsson had opened the scoring before Dorrans' first spot-kick and Andy Carroll then clawed one back for Newcastle after the break.
But the Magpies then had defender Ryan Taylor dismissed as Dorrans hit his second penalty and Jerome Thomas was able to clinch the win with a late fourth. Carroll grabbed his second in stoppage-time.
The meeting came just six days after the two sides had met in the Coca-Cola Championship and Di Matteo named an unchanged side from the one which started that 2-2 draw, while Newcastle made five changes.
Tim Krul came in for a rare start in the Magpies goal and he had to be alert in the opening seconds to rush out and claim the ball from in front of Roman Bednar.
Carroll looped a header onto the roof of the net at the end of a good move before Olsson broke the deadlock in the 17th minute - just as he had at St James' Park on Monday night.
Opener
Chris Brunt swung in a corner from the right and Olsson was left unmarked to plant a header into the bottom corner.
Jose Enrique was stationed on the post and hooked the ball clear but it had clearly crossed the line and a goal was given.
The Newcastle players were unhappy with the decision but could have few complaints when referee James Linnington then gave Albion a 31st-minute penalty.
A long ball forward was not dealt with by Magpies defender Tamas Kadar and Bednar wrestled his way clear.
The Czech striker was in on goal until Kadar hauled him down and the defender was fortunate to only see yellow.
Dorrans stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick confidently to put the home side in control.
Chris Hughton replaced the ineffective Fabrice Pancrate at the break, bringing on striker Shola Ameobi, and his pass allowed Danny Guthrie to fire in an early drive which appeared to hit Olsson's arm.
Protests
Referee Linnington was unmoved by the protests and Ameobi then came close to a goal of his own with a powerful shot from 20 yards which Scott Carson pushed away.
Ameobi was having a big impact and he played a part in Carroll's 62nd-minute goal.
The forward played Jonas Gutierrez in on the left flank and after reaching the byline the Argentina winger found Carroll inside the area to place a side-footed volley past Carson.
It was a marvellous finish from Carroll but the game turned in a manic minute as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser.
Ameobi tumbled inside the area as he was sandwiched by two defenders but referee Linnington continued to frustrate the visitors by waving play on.
And seconds later at the other end, Taylor felled the flying Thomas and was promptly dismissed, allowing Dorrans to convert his second penalty of the game and put Albion back on track.
Thomas then made it four in the 76th minute.
Enrique did well to make a sliding challenge on Bednar but the ball fell kindly for the winger to poke home from close range.
Carroll got a late consolation for the Magpies in the first minute of stoppage time, weaving past three defenders before shooting past Carson, but it is Albion who will be in round five.
