Former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Sylvinho will be appointed as Lyon's new head coach, club president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed.

The Brazilian will replace Bruno Genesio, who announced in April he would have left the club come the end of the season after three and a half years at the helm.

Sylvinho was appointed as head coach for the Brazil under-23 team in April but was released from his contract on Friday.

He has never coached a club at senior level, although he had spells as an assistant manager for the Brazil national team, Inter Milan and Corinthians.

He will be joined by club legend Juninho Pernambucano, who will take up the sporting director role.

"Juninho will arrive quickly," Aulas told Canal Plus on Saturday.

"He chose the coach. I met with Sylvinho, and he agreed. [Juninho] knows me, he knows where he is, I worked a lot with him when he was at the club as a player.

"He will come as soon as possible, we have sorted out in recent days the arrival of Sylvinho, who we have taken out of contract with the Brazilian federation, it was not very simple. I don't think there would have been many clubs capable of convincing the Brazilian representatives."

Lyon finished their season on a high with a 4-0 win over Caen guaranteeing them third place in Ligue 1 and a spot in next year's Champions League group stage.

They will take on Nimes in their final league game of the season on Friday.
