New York City FC midfielder Thomas McNamara scored a long-range stunner in his side's 4-1 defeat to NY Red Bulls on Sunday.
Red Bulls stormed into a three-goal lead inside 41 minutes as Bradley Wright-Phillips, Ronald Zubar and Sacha Kljestan put the hosts in control.
New York City FC's McNamara restored some hope for his side with an emphatic strike that flew into the top corner just before half-time, but Patrick Vieira's side failed to overturn the deficit as Wright-Phillips grabbed another after the break to seal the win.
McNamara was a small positive in an otherwise miserable afternoon for NYC as head coach Vieira was also sent off for a touchline altercation.
McNamara, a former Brown University player, almost struck again from long range in the second half, hitting the crossbar with a curling effort that would have made the score 3-2 with 30 minutes to play.
