A 1-1 draw in Toronto was enough for New York City to edge their way to the top of the Eastern Conference standings in Major League Soccer on Wednesday night.

New York struck first when Kwadwo Poku curled in a shot from the corner of the area in the 16th minute, but they had to settle for a point after Will Johnson poked home from close range three minutes before half-time.

The result lifts New York one point clear of the Montreal Impact, although they have played a game more. The Philadelphia Union are two points off top spot and have two games in hand.
