LA Galaxy's Steven Gerrard was injured during his team's 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes

Gyasi Zardes scored two goals early in the second half as Los Angeles beat 10-man San Jose 3-1 in the season opener of the California Clasico rivalry on Saturday, but they lost Steven Gerrard to injury.

Jelle Van Damme headed the ball across the front of goal and Zardes converted with a toe-poked finish in the 56th minute before doubling lead six minutes later with an opportunistic strike at Kip Colvey's errant clearance.

Robbie Keane completed scoring with a penalty for the Galaxy in the 91st minute, however, team-mate Gerrard's night was cut short when he was forced off in the opening minutes with an apparent calf injury.

The former England international was attempting to track down a cleared ball when he pulled up, and he departed after an examination by medical staff.

The Brazilian midfielder scored from outside the box in the 77th minute to level the score at 3-3, and then added a free kick in the 83rd to seal the win.
