Arsenal majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke has suffered a setback in the building of a new $2.6 billion stadium in Los Angeles.

The opening date for the 70,240-capacity football stadium under construction in Inglewood, California, has been pushed back one year to 2020, instead of 2019 as originally planned.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Rams, who are owned by Kroenke, confirmed the delay for the stadium, which will be shared with the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to the Rams, who are financing the stadium, developers blame the delays on record rainfall in the Los Angeles area over the past several months. They have hindered the extensive excavation necessary to complete the project.

The new stadium is scheduled to host the Super Bowl in February 2021 but this is now in doubt because NFL rules stipulate a stadium cannot host a Super Bowl in its inaugural season.
