Manchester City v West Brom preview: John Stones fit for hosts

Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion

Manchester City defender John Stones is fit to face West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports.

The England international has recovered from a muscular problem that has kept him out of action since April 8.

West Brom are eighth in the table but have not won in their last seven league matches.

Pep Guardiola is still expecting opposite number Tony Pulis to field a team that will make life tough for the home side.

"They are professionals, they will play to win," Guardiola said. "Tony Pulis teams don't play thinking it doesn't matter. It's a real final for us, and we are going to be ready."

Fourth-place City, who are one point behind Liverpool with this game in hand, can take a significant step towards reaching next season's Champions League if they win.

They will qualify if they better Arsenal's result at home to Sunderland, also live on Sky Sports on Tuesday.

Team news

Stones is back but Fabian Delph will miss the game after picking up an injury in training.

Sergio Aguero could return to the starting XI after he featured as a late substitute in Saturday's victory over Leicester having recovered from a groin strain.

Guardiola also said the game would give fans the opportunity to say farewell to long-serving full-back Pablo Zabaleta, who will leave at the end of the season.

Gareth McAuley is a fresh injury absentee for West Brom's trip.

The Northern Ireland international defender, who has started every single Premier League game so far this season, was forced off against Chelsea on Friday night with an injury and will not recover in time.

Hal Robson-Kanu will have his hamstring problem assessed but Matty Phillips will remain sidelined by his hamstring issue.

Opta stats

City have won each of their last 10 Premier League fixtures against Albion, their second longest winning run against an opponent (12 v Newcastle, 2009-2015).

By contrast, the only team West Brom have lost more successive Premier League games to are Chelsea (11, 2002-2011).

Tony Pulis has won one of his 16 Premier League games against Man City (D4 L11), doing so with Stoke in January 2009.

Aguero has scored four goals and assisted another two in his four previous home Premier League games against West Brom.

Gabriel Jesus has been directly involved in seven goals in six Premier League starts (scoring five and assisting two).
The Brazilian has scored five times from seven shots on target in the Premier League for City.

47.5 per cent of West Brom's Premier League goals this season have been scored via set-pieces (exc. penalties), a league-high share. They have also scored 15 goals from corners; another league-high.

Since their 3-1 victory against Arsenal on March 18, the Baggies have yet to record another victory, failing to score in six of the seven games since (D2 L5).

City have won seven and lost none of their last 11 league matches at the Etihad Stadium; they last went 12 unbeaten on home soil in December 2012 (37-game run).

Kevin De Bruyne has provided 15 assists in the Premier League this season; the joint-most by a Manchester City player in a single season (also David Silva in 2011/12).

Merson's prediction

West Brom did well against Chelsea, they tend to be competitive in big games. You look at City, they were fortunate with the late Riyad Mahrez penalty, but I can't see them not winning here.

You realise now what a huge miss that Mahrez penalty was, if it had stood, Arsenal would be a point behind. A win at the Etihad on Wednesday pretty much secures them a top-four spot.

They looked dangerous in the first half with Leroy Sane, David Silva and Yaya Toure all pulling the strings in different ways in midfield. I can see a relatively comfortable win.

PAUL PREDICTS: 3-0 (5/1 with Sky Bet)
