Celtic are without four players for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Striker Leigh Griffiths is unwell and remains in Scotland hoping to recover for the match with Inverness CT next weekend.

Defender Kolo Toure has been out of action since the corresponding Group C clash at Celtic Park on October 19, which the visitors won 2-0, and did not travel to Germany with the squad.

Jozo Simunovic, who deputised in the 1-0 victories over Rangers in the League Cup semi-final and Aberdeen in the Premiership, was also missing from the travelling party.

Mikael Lustig slotted into central defence for the 4-0 win over Ross County last Wednesday and is likely to partner Erik Sviatchenko at Borussia-Park.

The Celtic squad trained on Monday morning ahead of their Champions League match against Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany

Cristian Gamboa should slot in at right-back in place of Lustig with Emilio Izaguirre continuing at left-back in the absence of Kieran Tierney.

Stuart Armstrong will hope to continue in midfield after impressing in the past three matches, with Nir Bitton starting the match on the bench.

Celtic assistant Chris Davies said: "Leigh Griffiths is not very well. He wasn't at training so he won't be travelling out.

"Jozo Simunovic is building up his progression back into the team. He was out for a long time so he won't travel, while Kolo Toure still has a slight issue."

Opta stats

Celtic have won only one of their last 11 games against German opposition, in all competitions (D2 L8), it was against VfB Stuttgart at home in the Last 16 of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup (3-1).

Celtic have lost nine of their last 11 Champions League games (W1 D1).

Borussia Mönchengladbach have won only one of their four home games in the Champions League (D1 L2), it was against Sevilla in November 2015 (4-2).

All four of Borussia Mönchengladbach's home games in the Champions League have always seen both teams score.

Celtic have lost 26 of their 28 Champions League games away from home (W1 D1) and have never kept a clean sheet.

Celtic's last two away games in the Champions League - both against Barcelona - have seen them concede 13 goals.

The last time a Scottish club won an away game against German opposition was back in October 1998 when Rangers defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Cup (2-1). Since then, Scottish clubs have lost 12 of their 14 trips to Germany, in all competitions (D2).

Charlie Nicholas' prediction

Celtic have blown everybody away in Scotland because they're miles better but this is their last chance of salvaging anything from their European campaign.

Gladbach ripped them apart in Glasgow and did it without four or five of their best players, so I fear the worst given they are woeful away from home.

I'm not sure what they can do now. Will they just sit in and rely on Moussa Dembele's pace on the counter-attack? Gladbach don't concede many so it looks a tough ask.

Thorgan Hazard and Raffael could come back in as well, but I'm looking at Mahmoud Dahoud as a really dangerous and unpredictable player who will trouble Celtic.
