Martin's starting stats

I attended a heart-warming evening at Wembley on Tuesday night and witnessed the touching unification between England and France - the new Entente Cordiale if you will. The game was impeccably staged by the authorities at Wembley in testing circumstances.

The main memory of Tuesday will be the tributes to those who lost their lives in France and the football was of secondary importance, but there were a few noteworthy facts which I will detail for you here.

The game was England's 950th international and if you count penalty shoot-outs as draws then England's record is W540 D229 L181. It was the 30th game against France and the record is W17 D5 L8.

However, this was England's first win in seven meetings since Le Tournoi in Montpellier when an Alan Shearer goal secured a 1-0 win.

Dele Alli scored his first goal in his first international start past Spurs club-mate Hugo Lloris with a little flick off Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny who he faced in the North London derby before the international break. Wayne Rooney scored his 51st England goal in his 109th cap - the first aged in his 30s.

The average age of the England team was 23-and-a-half - the youngest starting XI since a game against Wales in October 1959.

Leighton Baines is ready for a return to first-team action with Everton after two ankle surgeries
Image: Everton, who have been without Leighton Baines all season, have not scored from a set piece

All of Everton's 20 Premier League goals have come from open play. Which team has scored the most/ fewest goals from set-pieces in a season? Paul

MARTIN SAYS: Everton may be missing the injured Leighton Baines' left-foot from set pieces, but it's worth pointing out they are still the fifth-highest scorers in the top flight this season.

Derby County registered just three set-piece goals (of 20 in total) during their torrid relegation campaign of 2007/08, while Manchester City scored just four in 2006/07, despite finishing 14th - although they only scored 29 goals in total.

Liverpool's 37 set-piece goals in 2013/14, when Brendan Rodgers' side came agonisingly close to their first Premier League title scoring 101 goals in total. That's the highest in a single season since specific Opta scoring statistics were introduced in 2005.

Tottenham currently top this season's set-piece table with eight goals, ahead of Crystal PalaceLeicester and West Ham on seven.

Five… alive?

Remi Garde watched from the stands as Villa were beaten at Tottenham on Monday Night Football
Image: Villa have just five points this season, and only one side have survived in the Premier League from this position after 12 games

Aston Villa have five points so far. What is the fewest amount of points after 12 PL games a team has collected and managed to stay up? Steven

MARTIN SAYS: Aston Villa are in some company when looking back at Premier League history, sitting alongside six other sides who gained just five points or less from the first 12 games.

Of those six teams, just one stayed up; Everton managed to stay afloat in 1994/95 after losing eight of their first 12 games, managing to lose just seven of their remaining 30 to eventually finish in 15th. However, that was a 22-team league, so Everton had 30 matches to save themselves - Aston Villa have just 26.

Villa have a fresh man in the hot seat in Remi Garde, who got off to a solid start with a 0-0 draw at home to leaders Manchester City, but history suggests the poor start could be their downfall come May.

Queens Park Rangers (4 pts - 2012/13), Manchester City (5 pts - 1995/96), Sheffield Wednesday (5 pts - 1999/00), Sunderland (5 pts - 2005/06) and Swindon Town (5 pts - 1993/94) all fell after registering five points or less after 12 games.

Fewest points after 12 games

Season Team and points Relegated?
1994/95 Everton - 4 pts No
2012/13 QPR - 4 pts Yes
1995/96 Man City - 5 pts Yes
1999/00 Sheff Wed - 5 pts Yes
2005/06 Sunderland - 5 pts Yes
1993/94 Swindon - 5 pts Yes
2015/16 Aston Villa - 5 pts ?

A goal every game

Image: Leicester have scored in all 12 of their Premier League games this season

I read that Leicester are the only team in the Premier League who have scored in every match this season - what's the longest run in Premier League history? Jack, London

MARTIN SAYS: Leicester have a way to go if they are to equal Arsenal's record of scoring in all 38 of their Premier League games in the 2001/02 season.

The Gunners lost just three games as they won the league by seven points from Liverpool, and scored more than once in 25 of their 38 games.

Arsenal's consecutive goalscoring record carried on for another 16 games the next season, as a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United in December 2002 brought an end to the total 55-game run from May 2001.

Leicester's run of scoring in the first 12 games puts them 13th in Premier League history, but another eight games with a goal would put them into the top three.

Get away

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero leaves the pitch dejected
Image: The Manchester City-Liverpool fixture has yielded just four away wins in Premier League history

There have been only four away wins in Manchester City v Liverpool fixtures. Is that a record? Luke, Manchester

MARTIN SAYS: You're right. According, to Opta just four of the 36 Premier League games played between these two sides have ended in a victory for the visitors. That's a win rate of just 11.1 per cent,

We asked Opta to look at fixtures that have been played at least 10 times in the Premier League and we discovered six such fixtures where the away side has NEVER won.

Aston Villa v QPR (14 meetings)

Charlton v Southampton (12 meetings)

Bolton v West Brom (12 meetings)

Leicester v Sunderland (11 meetings)

Chelsea v Ipswich (10 meetings)

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest (10 meetings)

At the other end of the spectrum, the away side has won 70 per cent of games between Bolton and Leeds (seven of 10 meetings) and 66.67 per cent of matches between Crystal Palace and Everton (8 out of 12 meetings). Palace will look to end that run live on Monday Night Football on December 7.

League of London

Harry Kane celebrates after putting Spurs in front
Image: Harry Kane's London derby form in 2015 is impressive, but Chelsea lead the way against current top-flight clubs from the capital

Of the London sides currently in the top flight, who would come out on top in a mini-league in the Premier League era? Alex, Sutton

MARTIN SAYS: They may be unbeaten in Premier League London derbies since January, but Spurs' record against other teams from the capital is disappointing overall.

Of the five London sides in the Premier League currently, Tottenham's win percentage is just 25.7 per cent, registering 37 wins, 49 draws and 58 losses in 144 games against Crystal PalaceChelseaArsenal and West Ham.

Chelsea's 49 per cent win rate has them top of the mini-league, just 0.4 per cent above Arsenal.

West Ham are third with 27.2 per cent, helped by fine wins over Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal this season, while Palace prop up the table with just 10 wins out of their 48 games (20.8 per cent win rate)

London mini-league - Premier League era (against each other)

Arsenal 48.6
West Ham 27.2

Crystal Palace 20.8
