Didier Deschamps 'immensely disappointed' after France lose Euro 2016 final

France coach Didier Deschamps said his team had wasted "a big chance" to become Euro 2016 champions after falling 1-0 to Portugal in Sunday's final.

"The disappointment is there and it's immense," Deschamps told French television channel M6 at Stade de France.

"We've let a big chance to be champions pass us by."

France were hoping to win a record-equalling third European Championship, after previous successes in 1984 and 2000, and a third tournament on home soil after Euro 1984 and the 1998 World Cup.

Deschamps, who is under contract until 2018, was France captain in 1998 and 2000 and was bidding to emulate Germany's Berti Vogts by winning a European Championship as a player and coach.

"There are no words to describe this feeling," he added. "You need time to digest it. We suffered together, we won together, and in the end we lose together. It's difficult, but it's like that.

"It would have been magnificent to offer our fans this trophy, at home. But it's not the case in the end."

Five reasons for France's defeat as their Euro 2016 dream turned into a nightmare in Paris.

Speaking to a press conference following the defeat, Deschamps was quick to praise his side but felt that they could have been calmer in dealing with occasion.

"Of course the overriding emotion is of huge disappointment," the man who captained the Euro 2000 triumph and World Cup success two years before that said. "It's cruel to lose the final like that.

"You have to accept it, I congratulate Portugal - they are the newly-crowned champions.

"Clearly we had our chances and had the last opportunity (of normal time) with Andre-Pierre Gignac striking the post in stoppage time.

"We weren't clinical enough, we weren't cool-headed enough. Perhaps we also lacked a bit of freshness, although I've got nothing that I can hold against my players, they gave absolutely everything tonight.

"It really came down to very fine margins. But unfortunately we lacked what was essential. It's very hard, it's cruel but we have to accept it, and we'll have to digest this, all of us."
