Germany defender Antonio Rudiger is out of Euro 2016 after tearing knee ligaments during a training session on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old, who joined Roma on a permanent deal last month after a successful loan spell, was in line to start against Ukraine next Monday with Mats Hummels still dealing with a calf injury.

Rudiger had been a regular in Joachim Low's line-up, playing at the heart of the Germany defence alongside Jerome Boateng.

But he was injured when he lunged for the ball, twisting awkwardly and collapsing to the turf in obvious discomfort before being led away by their medical team.

Scans revealed the severity of the injury, and a statement from the team read: "The Germany international has been ruled out of the European Championship after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Die Mannschaft's first training session in Evian,"

"This was confirmed by an examination carried out by Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt and the medical team.

"Joachim Low and the rest of the management team will now make a decision on whether they will call up a replacement, with UEFA regulations allowing them to do so until the first match day."
