Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill says James McClean will play some part in Thursday's friendly against Northern Ireland, despite receiving abuse over his decision not to wear a Remembrance Day poppy.
O'Neill spoke to the Stoke winger, who is suspended for next Monday's Nations League trip to Denmark, amid fears that he could be targeted by Northern Ireland fans during Thursday's game.
When asked if McClean would have a part to play against Northern Ireland, he said: "Very much so, yes. I certainly wouldn't disown him because of that.
"I have spoken to him, he's fine, he's in really good fettle, and I think he's mindful of everything that has gone on, so I'm looking for him, whether he starts the game or he comes on, but he'll definitely play a part in proceedings."
O'Neill also said he will not rush 18-year-old Michael Obafemi into a decision on his international career while he is training with the Republic squad ahead of Thursday's friendly.
The Southampton forward also qualifies to play for England or Nigeria and will not feature in the UEFA Nations League visit to Denmark on Monday as he continues to consider his options.
"I haven't spoken to his parents but I've spoken to him," O'Neill said.
"He's enjoyed the training and has done really well. I think he's really enjoyed it but, in terms of decisions, I think that's a bit off.
"He's got things to think about. I wouldn't be rushing him."
The Republic of Ireland boss confirmed Matt Doherty's absence after the Wolves defender suffered a facial injury in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Wolves and suggested he may tinker with his formation to accommodate.
He said: "It's a blow, obviously, to us and a blow to him as well, but we'll make some adjustments along the way.
"It might change formation for us and things like that, but in that sort of position, we are as strong as we'll ever be with Seamus [Coleman] coming back and Cyrus Christie being able to play a number of positions for us, so the blow is softened because of that."
