Darren Randolph says he was surprised by the nature of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off exit to Denmark on Tuesday.
Martin O'Neill's side were beaten 5-1 defeat by Denmark, after Shane Duffy had given the hosts an early lead, but an own-goal equaliser from Cyrus Christie and the first goal from Christian Eriksen put the visitors ahead at half-time.
Eriksen then completed his hat-trick before Nicklas Bendtner converted a last-minute penalty.
Goalkeeper Randolph admitted the defeat was unexpected following a 0-0 draw in the first-leg tie in Copenhagen.
"It's extremely disappointing, obviously," he said. "We didn't see that coming whatsoever before the game.
"But it's done now."
O'Neill made a make-or-break decision at half-time to remove defensive midfielders David Meyler and Harry Arter.
He replaced them with Wes Hoolahan and Aiden McGready which left his side wide open allowing the Danes to increase their lead.
Middlesbrough 'keeper Randolph said: "We needed to try and get back into the game, so you're going to leave yourself open. We got punished.
"They got two goals in quick succession, we had to go and do the same. But it obviously didn't pan out that way. And then what happened, happened."
After the defeat, O'Neill said he would speak to Football Association of Ireland chief executive John Delaney about the contract extension he has already agreed verbally in the coming weeks.
However he admitted he would have to think about his future following the World Cup exit.
