Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan has been handed a first call-up by the Republic of Ireland, ahead of their final two World Cup qualifiers next month.

Hogan, who was born in Salford, qualifies for the country through his grandparents but was unavailable for Ireland's last squad because he was waiting for his documentation to be rubber-stamped.

The 25-year-old has scored three goals in 11 games for Villa this season, and is joined in the squad by fellow newcomer Aiden O'Brien of Millwall.

Midfielder Jeff Hendrick and forward David McGoldrick return following injury, but Greg Cunningham and Jonathan Walters remain absent with knee problems.

Moldova travel to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on October 6, before the Irish head to Cardiff for their final fixture against Wales.

Manager O'Neill said: "The Moldova game is everything to us, we have to win this game.

"It'll be a nervy 90 minutes, we've seen this before in a game we're hoping to win.

"We're going to try to go to Wales with everything to play for, so the game has become ultra-important.

"We've found the odd hiccup in the last couple of weeks, we can rectify that.

"You want to qualify for competitions, that's my job. We have two games and we know if we win them we would be desperately unlucky not to be in the play-offs."
