Michael McGovern insists that Northern Ireland can get through to the quarter finals of Euro 2016 after qualifying for the knockout stage.

Michael McGovern insists Northern Ireland are targeting more success at the European Championship and says his team-mates are relishing the opportunity to play either Wales or France in the next round.

Michael O'Neill's side made it through to the last-16 of the competition on Tuesday, despite losing 1-0 to world champions Germany at the Parc des Princes in their final Group C match.

McGovern produced an astonishing performance to protect Northern Ireland's goal difference against the three-time winners of the tournament.

And, following Turkey's 2-0 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening, Northern Ireland qualified for the next round as one of the four best third-placed teams.

"It's not really sunk in - I'm delighted to have played so well but also delighted for the team to have qualified for the last-16," said McGovern.

"I think it's a fantastic achievement and everyone should be proud of it. Before the tournament began we said we wanted to get out of the group and that we weren't here to just make up the numbers.

"To achieve that goal is very satisfying and we want even more of it now. We've enjoyed the experience so far and we don't want to go home, another game will be even better."

Northern Ireland will now play either hosts France or British rivals Wales in the next round of the competition, but McGovern insists he has no preference.

"Not really," said the 31-year-old. "Both games will be different. If we play Wales, both teams will probably think they have a good chance of winning the game.

"Obviously if you play France it will be an amazing occasion, playing the host nation, so both would have different things. But we're just happy we're in the next round and we're going to be here a bit longer."

McGovern's contract with Scottish Premiership club Hamilton Academical runs out at the end of this month and the goalkeeper admits he will consider offers from other sides, should they come in after the Euros.

"I'm not sure," he admitted. "I'm a very ambitious person and I've loved it at Hamilton the last couple of years and they're keen to keep me.

"But I don't know what's happening yet, we'll have to wait and see. I want to play at the highest level I can and make the most of my career.

"Hopefully there'll be a few decent offers from people but we'll have to see after the Euros. At the moment my only focus is on the Euros."
