Northern Ireland and Manchester United defender Paddy McNair says Jose Mourinho has been in touch to wish him good luck at Euro 2016.

Mourinho is McNair's new club manager, having been named Louis van Gaal's successor last month on a three-year contract, with an option for a fourth.

The 21-year-old McNair has made 27 appearances for United so far and will be hoping to add to that tally under his new manager.

But first he has the small matter of the Euro 2016 tournament in France and Northern Ireland begin their campaign against Poland on Sunday in Nice.

Asked ahead of the game if he had spoken to Mourinho yet, McNair said: "He sent me a text message wishing me good luck for the tournament, which was nice of him.

"I'm sure he'll be watching and I'll be trying my best. Hopefully, he likes what he sees."

And McNair was also able to reveal that legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be taking a keen interest in Northern Ireland's campaign as well.

McNair said: "After the FA Cup final I was getting in the lift and he wished me good luck for the tournament and said he'd be there watching."

McNair's fellow Northern Ireland squad members Roy Carroll, Jonny Evans, Corry Evans, Craig Cathcart, Luke McCullough and Oliver Norwood all represented United at various levels during Ferguson's hugely successful reign.

United's newest star is young striker Marcus Rashford, whose form last season was so impressive that he forced his way into the England squad for this summer's tournament.

"He came in at the end of season and it was breathtaking, in a way, how well he adapted, the goals he scored," said McNair.

"You see him in training, he's got a lot of ability, and I think he will be a top player."
