'England players should look to Wales' says Clayton Blackmore

Former Wales and Manchester United star Clayton Blackmore believes England's players should look to their Welsh rivals if they want to succeed in international football.

Wales became the first debutant nation to reach the European Championship semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Belgium on Friday, days after England were dumped out to the smallest nation Iceland in the last-16.

Blackmore, who earned 39 caps for Wales between 1985 and 1997 and was their assistant manager, believes some England players have had a "weird" attitude towards playing for their country for many years.

The 51-year-old told Sky Sports News HQ: "We love playing for our country. It's not about money. There isn't any.

"Maybe a few of the England players need to look at themselves and go down that route.

"It's always a team game. I think Gareth Bale made one solo run (last night). The team's done the work off the ball.

"We always wanted to play for our country. Gary Speed would say in the middle of the season: 'I could murder a Wales game'.

"Then you'd talk to Gary Pallister and they weren't happy to go play for England. It was weird."

Blackmore heaped praise on Chris Coleman and the Welsh players after Ashley Williams, Hal Robson-Kanu and substitute Sam Vokes scored the goals in Lille to book a semi-final with Portugal in Lyon next Wednesday.

He said the nation's unlikely success began with the work of the late Gary Speed and is down to meticulous planning and hard work of everyone within Welsh FA.

"I remember talking to Gary Speed (when he was in charge), and he was just trying to get them to believe they could win games," Blackmore said.

"All of a sudden they won three or four and then Chris Coleman took over and made it fantastic. He's the one who's managed them for the last four years, with the backroom staff. And even the FA too have spent money to make sure they've got the right equipment.

"I was very nervous until Hal scored a fantastic goal worthy of winning any competition final. We had more possession and played some fantastic football.

"Ashley Williams and Aaron Ramsey are the two key players; the spine of the team. Aaron is our main running machine and we'll miss him. His stats are scary, the amount of running he gets through.

"But we've got fit players on the bench and I'm sure they'll do the job. Andy King is one, and Jonny Williams is a fantastic player. I'm hoping he gets a run out. He can take the fight to them."
