Sven-Goran Eriksson has told Sky Sports News he is interested in becoming the next Scotland manager.
But the former England boss has denied there has been any approach so far from the SFA, and says reports linking him with the position have come "out of the blue".
Eriksson says he is still "hungry" to work, having last held a position with the Philippines in January, and would welcome talks with SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell.
However, Sky sources understand the SFA has no plans to speak to Eriksson over the vacant role.
Maxwell is working through a list of preferred candidates, and the SFA has already received notes of interest from dozens of candidates across the world, including some high-profile names.
Eriksson, 71, led England to the quarter-finals in each of the three major competitions that he was in charge of the national side.
Alex McLeish was sacked last week after 14 months into his second spell with Scotland following a poor start to Euro 2020 qualification.
Scotland topped their UEFA Nations League Group during McLeish's reign, which secured them a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying play-off place.
But a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan in their opening game of Euro 2020 qualifying in March proved to be decisive in the SFA's decision to relieve McLeish of his duties.
Scotland resume their qualification campaign in June, with matches against Cyprus and Belgium.
