Scotland recall is not a step backwards, insists Steven Fletcher

Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher insists his recall to the Scotland national team is not a step backwards.
The 31-year-old has been drafted in by manager Alex McLeish for upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Albania and Israel, live on Sky Sports.
Fletcher last played for Scotland 13 months ago and has an international record of nine goals in 31 appearances.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his Scotland return, Fletcher rejected the notion that Scotland are taking a step backwards by returning to players who previously represented the country.
"I'm here to help in any way, shape or form," he said. "Even if it's not playing and it's off the pitch, giving a bit of advice to the young lads and helping them in training and in the games if I do get a chance to play then I can help like that as well."

After working hard to come back from serious knee injury, Fletcher admits his game changed as a result, but insists he never considered shutting the door on his Scotland career.
"I've been out for about a year and a half with my knee so it was [a case of] me looking and thinking, 'I've not officially retired but maybe my time has gone for the national team'.

"But I managed to get back fit and playing more this season. The manager gave me the call and asked me if I would want to and I said I'd jump at the chance.
"I haven't [considered retirement] I still felt like I had a lot to offer. I was playing well at my club so if I can help in any way then happy days."
