Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers says Kieran Tierney would make an ideal Scotland captain as he is cut from the same cloth as Scott Brown.

Brown confirmed on Monday that he was bringing an end to his Scotland career after 55 caps, having previously gone back on his 2016 decision to retire from international football.

Tierney became Celtic's youngest captain against Kilmarnock earlier this season and the 20-year-old has already skippered his country, being named captain by interim boss Malky Mackay for the friendly against the Netherlands.

Alex McLeish has since taken over as Scotland manager and now has an added decision to make over the national captaincy before his first matches in charge, which come against Costa Rica and Hungary next month.

Rodgers said: "There is no question Kieran could do it. He's a great ambassador for Scotland because of how he prepares himself and how he works every day.

"He has availability and that's important, that you've got players that captain teams that are available and play games.

"Alex will have a few candidates he'll look at. Malky gave Kieran the armband the last time and it was a proud moment for him. And, of course, he's captained Celtic already.

"I know he'd be very proud of that, I'm sure. But Alex will have a few candidates he'll look at. Malky gave Kieran the armband the last time and it was a proud moment for him. And, of course, he's captained Celtic already.

"He's one who has those qualities, he's inspirational. He's been in the shadow of Browny since he broke into the squad and he's learned some terrific traits off him.

"Because of the type of personality he is it wouldn't be a concern but, of course, there is a big responsibility in captaining Celtic and your national team.

"He's obviously looked up to him [Brown] when he was a fan of the club and through the academy. He's seen someone there who's a shining light. He's looked at his habits, professionalism and jumped on that straight away.

"Players who've come in here get a surprise when they meet Scott as he's totally different to what's perceived. He's been a great role model for Kieran."
