Sky Sports News has learnt there is a groundswell of support from inside the Scottish FA for Scotland U21 coach Scot Gemmill to be considered for the senior manager’s job.

Gemmill has become the favourite with some bookmakers for the vacancy, and we understand he would be interested in succeeding Gordon Strachan.

It is unclear if support for Gemmill extends to the SFA board, who are due to meet on Tuesday to discuss the fall-out of the failed pursuit of Michael O'Neill.

Chief executive Stewart Regan told Sky Sports News last Wednesday that they intend to make a permanent appointment before the friendlies in March against Costa Rica and Hungary.

Gemmill, who was capped 26 times by his country and was part of Scotland's Euro 96 and World Cup 98 squads, joined the Scottish FA in 2014 as U17 coach.

He then worked with the U19 squad before becoming U21 coach in 2016.

Under his leadership Scotland reached the UEFA U17 European Championship semi-finals in 2014, and at last summer's Toulon Tournament Scotland's U20s beat Brazil for the first time ever at any age level.
