Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor insists he is ready to make his debut for Scotland ahead of Thursday's friendly against the Netherlands

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor says he is "ready" to make his Scotland debut ahead of Thursday's international friendly against the Netherlands, live on Sky Sports.

After earning his first call-up in September 2014 against Germany, McGregor was often omitted from Gordon Strachan's squad but after a three-year wait, he may finally earn his first international cap under interim boss Malky Mackay.

Mackay has been full of praise for the midfielder, who has played a pivotal role in helping Celtic achieve their 63-game unbeaten record, labelling the 24-year-old as Scotland's "most improved" player over the last 18 months.

And McGregor believes his experience of playing in "big" Champions League games will stand him in good stead to perform for his country on the international stage.

"I feel ready to play, obviously the last few times it's been great to be here but this time round I feel like I can play a part," said McGregor.

"(Playing) the big Champions League games and doing well in them, obviously that gives you the confidence to kick on and hopefully play at this level.

"I've developed massively (since first call-up) in terms of experience and playing in these big games. You're just learning all the time and this time it feels a lot different (to the first call-up)."

McGregor admits he has experienced "disappointment" in his long wait for his Scotland debut, but insists he is "delighted" to be a part of Mackay's squad this time out.

When asked whether the wait to make his Scotland debut left him frustrated, he said: "I think as a professional you want to play at the highest level you can.

"Obviously, there is that disappointment when you don't play but at the same time when you're selected, it's great to be a part of it.

"So for me, I'm just delighted to be a part of this squad and to get a chance to play."
