Kenny Miller says Scotland's "underdogs" are capable of getting a result against England at Wembley on Friday.
Gordon Strachan's side go into the World Cup Qualifier fourth in Group F, having taken four points from their opening three games.
The manager and players came in for criticism after a disappointing double header in October against Lithuania and Slovakia yielded just one point but Miller, who retired from international duty after winning 69 caps and scoring 18 goals for his country, says Scotland always turn up for the big games.
"I think we've got as good a chance as we have in any game. We've not started great within the group, we could have had a couple of better results and performances probably. In a game like this you are definitely going in as underdogs.
"One, you're away from home and two, you're playing against a team that has got a level of player that is superior to you.
"But that's never been an issue for us. Any time we have come up against the bigger nations we normally rise to the occasion."
Miller was the last player to score for Scotland against England at Wembley, in a 3-2 friendly defeat in August 2013.
However, he has backed Strachan to provide his side with the right preparation for the occasion in London and does not believe Scotland should fear their English opponents.
"I felt in the last game at Wembley we went into that and were not really given much chance with the level of player you are coming up against and the fact it's at Wembley. I thought we should have got something from that game," he said.
"I know there were no points up for grabs, it was a friendly, but I think we should have at least come away with a draw. Our performance on the night was very, very good. So there's no reason the lads can't go and do that again and I'm sure Gordon will have them prepared for the test at hand.
"Let's be honest, [England] are not in a great shape at the moment themselves, so there's no reason why we can't go and get a positive result."
