In an interview with Sky Sports, Shahid Khan reveals his offer to buy Wembley is worth £1bn, and adds that the FA will be able to continue playing cup finals at the national stadium

The offer to purchase Wembley Stadium from the FA is worth £1bn, says prospective buyer Shahid Khan.

The 67-year-old owner of Fulham FC and NFL side the Jacksonville Jaguars also said he wants the FA to continue staging various cup finals at the stadium - but suggested the governing body may instead choose to take them around the country.

It was revealed on Friday that Khan was in discussions with the FA to buy Wembley for a deal originally believed to be worth around £800m.

However, Khan explained the figure was even higher, saying: "Our offer is for £600m, but the FA retains all the rights to the games - the national games, the cup games - in perpetuity.

"Those are really the profitable part of the transaction, and those are estimated, I think, to be a little over £400m.

"So that's how you come up with the £1bn number."

Wembley currently hosts a variety of domestic cup finals, ranging from the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup to the Checkatrade Trophy and FA Vase.

Despite the fact that Khan's potential purchase of Wembey could see the Jacksonville Jaguars play regular NFL matches at the stadium, he insists he still wants the ground to host these cup finals.

He said: "Absolutely - I hope they stay.

"But this might be the time where the FA thinks: 'Hey, we would like to distribute them to other parts of England'. That would be their prerogative.

"We would hope as many as possible stay at Wembley."

Khan is keen to press on with the purchase, and he wants the deal completed before the new football seasons starts in August.

Asked for a timeframe for the transaction, Khan said: "We think it depends on both parties.

"It would depend on the FA, but we've got the World Cup coming up, you get the legal representatives involved - probably eight to 12 weeks."
