England legend Alex Scott admits there are unanswered questions over the FA's handling of the Mark Sampson affair

England legend Alex Scott says there are "a lot of unanswered questions" following the FA's decision to sack Mark Sampson.

Scott - England's second most-capped player in history - played extensively under Sampson and announced her retirement from international football earlier this month.

Sampson was twice cleared twice of any wrongdoing after allegations of discrimination and racism made by Chelsea and England striker Eni Aluko.

But he was sacked on Wednesday after the FA became aware of "inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour" during his time as Bristol Academy boss.

Speaking at an event to announce the finalists for The Best FIFA Football Awards, Scott told Sky Sports News: "I think we have to wait [to see what happens] over the next coming days. There are a lot of unanswered questions. I don't know anything more than anyone else does. I'm seeing how this unfolds myself.

"It's not a situation we would have wanted especially for women's football but it is going on.

"From the investigations that were before [into allegations of discrimination], I think people were asking questions and [saying] there wasn't transparency. In terms of all the politics and the HR stuff, I'm a football player, so I don't get involved in that side and I don't know the ins and outs."

DCMS select Committee chair Damian Collins MP has criticised the FA's handling of Sampson's sacking

Sampson was dismissed less than 24 hours after leading England to a 6-0 win over Russia in a World Cup qualifier against Russia on Tuesday night.

Manchester City Women's striker Nikita Parris opened the scoring for the Lionesses and ushered her team-mates over to Sampson, mobbing the Welshman in what appeared to be a show of support for him.

Asked about the goal celebration, Scott said: "I think this is where the situation starts to get a little bit messy because then people start pointing fingers and taking sides.

"For me, everyone that has been involved in the Lionesses has sacrificed so much over the years to do their utmost to play for England. It's always been their dream, so when I look at that England team I was proud watching the girls and that performance the other night.

"Those girls are passionate to play for their country and get to another World Cup that's what we should be celebrating - a fantastic 6-0 win over Russia who were supposed to be tough opponents."
