England were left with a familiar feeling after a penalty-shootout defeat to Germany knocked them out of Euro 2017.
Nathan Redmond and Tammy Abraham saw their spot-kicks saved by Julian Pollersbeck to send Germany into the European U21 Championship final on Friday after extra-time in Tychy ended 2-2.
James Ward-Prowse, Lewis Baker and Ben Chilwell were all successful from 12 yards and at one point in the shoot-out England held the advantage after Jordan Pickford denied Yannick Gerhardt.
But Abraham's failure put the Young Lions under pressure and Redmond's miss sent them home.
England are no strangers to penalty elimination at major tournaments, having been knocked out by Germany at senior level at both the 1990 World Cup and Euro '96.
Their last shoot-out failure at the European U21 Championship came in 2007 when they lost 13-12 to the Netherlands.
That remains the longest shoot-out in a UEFA competition.
