Michael Keane believes a calm and composed performance can guide England to victory over Scotland in their World Cup Qualifier on Friday.

The Burnley defender hopes to make his international debut either at Wembley against Gordon Strachan's side or in England's friendly against Spain on Tuesday.

England have not faced Scotland in a competitive fixture since 1999, and ahead of this week's key Group F clash, interim manager Gareth Southgate has shown the players a video montage of previous matches between the sides, although Keane has warned against entering the game with emotions running too high.

In 144 years, England have never been more dominant in their football rivalry with Scotland

"I feel if we play our game we'll have too much for them," said Keane. "They might come and try to upset a few players but we have spoken about it, we know we have to keep our heads and not get involved. If we stick to what we're best at I'm sure the result will come.

"When I saw the video it gives you a feeling of how big a game it is for the fans and the history in the game. It's the oldest international fixture and to see the players who have played in the past, it fills you with pride. When we step out there all the players will be up for it.

"It's a massive fixture. It's a big game for bragging rights for the players as well as the fans. We'll be right up for it and can't wait for the game."

The Football Association will begin a search for a permanent manager next week following the end of Southgate's initial four-game spell in charge, and while Keane believes positive results can help the former Middlesbrough boss secure the role, he insists the players have little influence.

"The main thing is to focus on the performance on Friday," said the 23-year-old. "There's nothing the lads can do about Gareth's position. He's been fantastic but we have to focus on what we can and if we play well and get a good result I'm sure that can only help."

Keane was called up as a late injury replacement for Glen Johnson for games against Malta and Slovenia in October, but did not make an appearance in either match, and the former Manchester United player is looking to fulfil a lifelong ambition this time around.

"From being a little boy playing football and coming through the ranks all you want to do is play for England," he added. "If I had a chance to do that it would mean everything to me and I'm sure it would be a proud moment for my family as well.

"It's a great feeling. I was over the moon to be called up last time but to be in the initial squad is a great feeling. It was a very proud moment, I'm really happy to be here and hope I can prove myself."
