Steve Bruce says England's players have lost touch with the fans and need to start showing humility.
The Hull City boss, back in the Premier League after the Tigers' promotion last season, is a potential candidate to replace Roy Hodgson as England boss.
Hodgson quit following England's humiliating defeat to Iceland which ended their Euro 2016 campaign in the last 16.
Bruce says supporters perceive that the England stars are focused on the trappings of fame, and he insists they are over-pampered.
"Call me old fashioned, but we're now holding umbrellas up as our players get off a plane," he told the Daily Mail.
"Do they need that? It's a few spots of rain. OK, they might get wet. Well, let them get wet. That's what happens when it rains.
"We've got to find our humility again because, frankly - we ain't that great. We haven't got anywhere near winning, yet we've got very good players. So something is missing.
"I think the average man looks at players now and he's not so sure any more. He thinks all they care about is cars, houses, what watch they've got. We've got to address that. We've got to find our English identity, we've got to find that humility again."
