Former England caretaker manager Peter Taylor believes Wayne Rooney should remain captain of his country despite their miserable showing at Euro 2016.

England crashed out of the tournament at the last-16 stage on Monday following a shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland in Nice.

Rooney, who fired Roy Hodgson's side ahead from the penalty spot in the third minute, was widely criticised for his performance in the second round of the competition, but Taylor believes his services should be retained by the new national coach.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Taylor, who took charge of England in November 2000 between the tenures of Kevin Keegan and Sven-Goran Eriksson, said: "If whoever takes over believes Wayne can still contribute to the team then I'm sure he'll remain as captain.

"If you look at a lot of the players in the squad, especially for the tournament, we have got a lack of experience so we need some experience."

Rooney played in midfield for the majority of the competition and despite the results, which included a victory over Wales and draws with Russia and Slovakia, Taylor remains convinced a central role is where Rooney will be deployed in the future.

"Wayne, to be fair to him, in the games that he played in the tournament played in a slightly different position and he played exceptionally well, so he may have to think about playing more of a midfield position now," said the former Tottenham and Crystal Palace winger.
