England v Iceland: Ahead of Euro 2016 clash, watch 2004's 6-1 rout including Wayne Rooney double

England face Iceland in the last 16 of the European Championships - and they dealt out a thrashing the last time the sides met.

Roy Hodgson's men are 8/15 favourites to advance to the quarter-finals having finished second in Group B, behind rivals Wales.

Their Nordic opponents have been the competition's surprise package so far and have an identical record to the Three Lions, winning one and drawing two of their opening three games.

But despite having played each other only twice previously, it's England that come out on top.

The first fixture between the two took place almost 35 years ago, in 1982, when a crowd of just over 11,000 saw the sides contest a 1-1 draw.

Arnor Gudjohnsen - father of Eidur - gave the home side the lead on 23 minutes, only for Paul Goddard to pull the English level with 20 minutes to play.

But the only other encounter - in 2004 - saw a rampant England, under the stewardship of then-manager Sven Goran Eriksson emerge as 6-1 winners at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

Frank Lampard opened the scoring after 25 minutes, with an 18-year-old Wayne Rooney doubling the advantage just 2 minutes later.

It was 3-0 on 37 minutes, England's teenage future captain grabbing a second, hammering the ball into the top corner from 30 yards out.

Watford striker Heidar Helguson pulled one back for the visitors before half-time. But two goals for Darius Vassell and a first international goal for left-back Wayne Bridge sealed the victory for England , in what was their final warm up game ahead of that summer's Euros in Portugal.

It was the perfect way to conclude their tournament preparations, having laboured to a draw with Japan four days earlier, a result that saw questions over tactics and formation arise, as they have for Roy Hodgson in recent times.

Swedish manager Eriksson gave an understated reaction to the pre-Euro 2004 rout, remarking afterwards: "It was good preparation and there were many positive things."

From population to past meetings, the last-16 opponents compared

Following concern over England's recent potency in front of goal, current boss Hodgson will undoubtedly be hoping for a similar result on June 27 - as criticisms of his attacking strategy continue to be tabled.

A result akin to that of 2004 would undoubtedly put those issues to bed, but against a resolute Iceland yet to be defeated, the task will be far more difficult than that of 12 years ago.
